"I was serious, when I asked Fire to kill me. Everything feels... too broken to fix. I know... Cansu wants my help. But I'm so tired. None of this even matters anyway, right? If I give up, Asra will just bring me back and we'll start again."Nothing to Ghost in Episode 10: Pride Law.

Nothing is a disabled African lioness, Hover's love interest and the main protagonist of My Pride.

Nothing was born nameless in Starmane's Pride at the Sisters Steppe to Powerstrike and Starmane alongside her two brothers, Fire and Spark. After a No-Mane attack on Starmane by Quickmane, Starmane and Spark were killed; Nothing was able to survive, as she fought back against Quick, but not without receiving permanent injuries to her face and left foreleg.

Following her huntress assessment, she was named Nothing by Powerstrike due to her injuries. She would come to meet in secret with Hover, a Prideless lioness and eventually fall in love with her. When a No-Mane, Proud, took over the Sisters Steppe from Quickmane, she was forced out of the Pride for her disability and became Prideless alongside her young cousin, Feather, to find Fire on the Prideless Stretch.

One night on the Stretch, Cansu takes Nothing through her memories in a past life and reveals to her that she is a reincarnation of Kyoga. She learns that Pride Law was created by Lite based on hate and fear and that Kyoga and Lite's spirits have been reincarnated through thousands of years, cursed by Asra to have Kyoga kill Lite in every life. She also learns that Asra has stayed hidden ever since then and that Sunce's anger for her actions never subsided, making dry season harder every year. Cansu asks for Nothing's help, telling her to break the cycle by finding Asra in the the Shifting Place and reconciling her with Sunce.

Believing Cansu's words to be a dream at first, Nothing continues to follow Pride Law and tries to find her and Feather a Pride, finally finding Fire in the process. After Fire presumably kills Feather by Moonstrike's orders to win over Barkmane's Pride, she loses all love for him and desperately fights with him for rights to the Pride, but Ghost intervenes and takes her to the Shifting Place. She realizes that what Cansu told her was true and despite losing her will to live, she follows him into the lush forest, where it shifts somewhere else moments after.

Personality[]

Nothing believed she was a burden on her Pride.[1] She seemed very confident at first,[3][1] but after her huntress assessment, she became increasingly concerned about her abilities.[1] She told Proud that he should tell the Pride that he killed her, assuming that the Pride will not care about her death and will easily move on.[2] However, she has a great deal of bravery, which was shown when she lunged at Quickmane as a cub and scarred the right side of his face, causing him to be half blind.[3]
She is also shown to be quite friendly, almost immediately befriending Hover after meeting her.[1] Additionally, she is very determined, insisting on taking her huntress assessment even after her mother, Powerstrike, had selected a name for her.[1] Nothing seems to be embarrassed of her name, she's also sometimes quite unkind to lions that she dislikes and is very protective of the ones that she loves.[6]
Nothing is also cunning, able to plan out clever solutions to a problem.[7] She has also never held a grudge; she does not hate her family even after all they have put her through, despite feeling hurt.[6] While living in exile with Feather, she lashed out at him when he tried to eat her catch; however, this was not out of malice, rather out of starvation and felt deep regret afterwards, even sacrificing her food to Feather for his sake.[8]
She also cares deeply about her family members, which is shown when she refused to go with Rain and ditch Feather in the Prideless Stretch alone.[8] Nothing is also shown to sometimes be a bit timid, as shown when Quickmane orders her to look after the cubs.[6]

Season 1[]

Nothing, nameless, is spending time with her family as a cub, when a No-Mane interrupts and kills Starmane and Spark to win the Pride. She fights back against the No-Mane and receives a permanant injury on her leg, causing her to walk with a limp. The goddesses curses the No-Mane for attacking her, allowing Nothing and her surviving brother, Fire, to stay in the Pride.
History Nothing post attack

Nothing after hearing Spark was dead

Years later, the No-Mane is her Pride's Mane as Quickmane and her mother, Powerstrike, had Farleap and Silentstalk with Quickmane, who taunt her for her injury. Before Fire is exiled from the Sisters Steppe to become a No-Mane, she vowed to receive her huntress name in a huntress assessment. She ultimately fails because of her injury and is given the name Nothing for her lack of skills and in spite of her injury. Fire is exiled and Nothing feels ashamed of herself.
Nothing later saves a Prideless lioness from a crocodile and the Prideless introduces herself as Hover. Hover, determined to stay her friend, meets with her in secret every morning, until eventually they catch feelings for each other. After Sharptongue passes away, Hover joins her Pride in order to support her, but Nothing misses her ceremony to meet with Fire alongside her young cousin, Feather. Quickmane finds out and is infuriated by her carelessness, attacking her and attempting to kill Fire.
When everyone Nothing cares about turns on her, she desperately goes out alone to find Fire before he can be killed. Nothing finds Quickmane dead however and finds that one of Fire's friends, Proud, killed him with intent to take over the Pride. She is exiled from Proudmane's Pride and takes Feather with her to find Fire, but gets lost on the Prideless Stretch in the process.
Nothing and Feather find a lioness on the stretch, Rain, who helps them find water. Rain pressures Nothing to drop Feather, at which Nothing gets angry and tells her that she'd rather have both of them die than leave him alone. A few seasons later, Rain visits Nothing again and is revealed to be Cansu, the Goddess. She takes her through the memories of a past life, where she learns she's a reincarnation of the ancient legend Kyoga. She is shown the harmful origins of Prides and Pride Law and learns that Asra cursed her and Lite's spirits. Rain tells her to find Asra and reunite her with Sunce to end the curse's cycle.
Feather and Nothing finally find Fire and Nothing agrees to help Fire defeat Barkmane to take over his Pride, but Feather ends up helping him instead, as Nothing freezes. When Fire defeats the Mane, the Hunt Chief, Moonstrike, refuses him as Mane and tells Fire to kill Feather if he insists on taking the Pride. Fire follows her orders and Nothing challenges him until Ghost intervenes and takes Nothing to the Shifting Place to find Asra.

Relationships[]

Starmane[]

Nothing enjoyed her father's company and was always very excited to see him. When he was killed in a battle against a No-Mane, she was badly shaken and attacked his killer for vengeance.[3] To this day, she is traumatized by the events of his death.[7]

Quickmane[]

Nothing and Quickmane had a mutually hostile relationship and neither liked each other.[1][6] Quickmane was shown to both hate and fear Nothing, thinking she was a demon and physically assaulting her for putting Feather in danger.[2]

Powerstrike[]

Nothing: "Someone help me stop [Quickmane]! Fire's innocent in all of this! Mother, please!"
Powerstrike: "Fire made his choice when he returned. I'm not his mother any longer. He's a No-Mane now."
Nothing: "What is wrong with you?! You used to love us!"
Powerstrike: "I do love you, Nothing! I love you so much it hurts! That's the problem, don't you see? Asra's teeth! You could've been a Hunt Chief! You could've been my proudest achievement. And yet... when I look at you, all I see is who you could have been. It makes me feel.. weak. Weak is one thing a Pride lioness can never be. So I don't look at you. Fire should've done the same to protect himself. He let you make him weak. And if that kills him, so be it."
Nothing and Powerstrike's argument Episode 5: Escape
Powerstrike and Nothing had a strong bond before Nothing had her huntress assessment.[3] Powerstrike secretly loves her unconditionally, but she admits that seeing Nothing's scars and injuries make her feel weak and that she thinks it's something a Pride lioness shouldn't feel, so she refuses to look at her.[2] This has caused her to neglect her daughter, going as far as dubbing her with the cruel name 'Nothing' when she failed her huntress assessment.[1] Nothing is angry and hurt at her mother's actions.[2]

Fire[]

Although Nothing and Fire seemed to have a troubling relationship when they were cubs,[3] they were shown to have bonded after the death of their father and brother and after Nothing's injuries.[1] The two are shown to be very close and trusting towards each other and Nothing feels he is one of the only lions she knows that does not shun her for her injury.[11]
After Nothing is exiled from Proudmane's Pride, Fire is shown to be cruel. Not only had he murdered his friend, Tangle, he is more than willing to kill their younger cousin Feather if it meant getting the Pride he was after. He then reveals his true feelings about Nothing, seeing her as weak and unable to do anything without his help and calling her a curse.[4]
His ableism and attempted murder of Feather pushes Nothing over the edge. She challenges him for the Pride he's trying to gain and almost gets killed in the process, being saved at the last minute by Ghost, who takes her away to go to the Shifting Place. Nothing's last words to her brother are that she couldn't believe that she couldn't see the lion Fire really was.[4]

Spark[]

Nothing and Spark were shown to be close as cubs, as Spark stands up to Nothing when rejected by Fire. Nothing doesn't leave him behind when telling him they have to leave before the No-Mane sees them.[3] Nothing was distraught over his death and still gets horrifying flashbacks of his death.[1][7]

Farleap[]

Farleap is often seen bullying and jeering Nothing for her injury[1], but Nothing does not seem to hate her back and stays passive when speaking to her, though she is shown to get annoyed and/or hurt when her half-sister taunts her on how she isn't 'normal'.[6]

Silentstalk[]

Silentstalk bullies Nothing just like Farleap, but is more silent and merely encourages Farleap.[1][6] However, like Farleap, Nothing is passive towards her is doesn't seem to issue any ill will.

Waterhunter[]

Nothing and Waterhunter have never been shown to directly interact with each other. Waterhunter, however, seems to somewhat care for Nothing, looking worried when she sees her niece's injuries after Quickmane attacks her.[3] She is also seen glaring at Farleap when she teases her. Despite this, she roared in favour of Nothing's cruel name after she failed her huntress assessment.[1]

Feather[]

Nothing often had to babysit her cousin and would find him quite annoying because of his attachment to her.[11] However, she does care about him, as she saved him twice, keeping him away from the Sisters Steppe when Quickmane is killed and moving him out of the way when a burning tree branch is about to fall on him.[2]
Despite this, she ended being conflicted about Feather's presence during exile, as Nothing had to sacrifice her own hunger for the life of the cub. After being questioned by Rain, she made up her mind and decided that she truly does love Feather as family, rather than Pride responsibility.[8]
The two eventually developed a closer bond after living for months on the Stretch.[7] Nothing is absolutely devastated when Fire presumably kills Feather to win over Barkmane's Pride, challenging Fire and risking her life to avenge him.[4]

Sister 1 and Sister 2[]

Nothing often had to babysit her cousins and seemed to care for them a lot.[11] When she realized that Quickmane was killed by Proud, a No-Mane, she knew that the cubs would be next and panicked as she attempted to save them, to no avail.[2]

Sharptongue[]

Nothing loved her grandmother and her stories. As a cub, Sharptongue would often tell Nothing and her brother stories of history and she would be incredibly engaged in them.[3] Sharptongue refused to call Nothing by her name for a while, as it was cruelly given to her by Powerstrike for her leg injury.[1] Nothing was devastated when she passed and felt very alone afterwards.[11]

Hover[]

"I think about Hover. A lot. I wonder if she stayed in the Pride, if I'll ever see her again. She lived her whole life on this stretch. I never understood how strong she must've been before."
Nothing's thoughts on Hover Episode 6: Prideless
Nothing and Hover are very close and love each other very much. When they first met, Hover made several remarks as to why Prides are silly, leaving Nothing intrigued.[3] When Sharptongue succumbed to illness, Nothing was devastated and Hover chose to leave her Prideless life behind and join Quickmane's Pride for her.[11]
When Fire takes Nothing to meet his friends, Nothing is anxious about missing Hover's huntress assessment, which she ends up missing, much to her dismay.[6] Hover becomes furious with Nothing for missing her assessment, due to her promising that she'd be there. She leaves Nothing to fend for herself, telling her that all of it was her own fault, leaving Nothing hurt as she goes alone.[2]
Nothing misses Hover very dearly after she is banished from the Proudmane's Pride and wonders if she ever left the Pride. As a Prideless lioness, she realizes that Hover was extremely strong for living her entire life on the Stretch just like her.[8] When she mistakes Rain for Hover, she is seen very enthustiastic as she runs towards the lioness, calling out Hover's name. However, when she figures it's somebody else, she is saddened that it isn't her.[8]

Proudmane[]

Nothing was rather indifferent about Proudmane at first, until he killed Quickmane and threatened to kill her, too. She seems scared of him and is slightly disbelieving of his behavior.[2]

Quotes[]

"Asra may take me, but you will never win."
Nothing before attacking Quickmane Episode 1: No-Mane
"I'm sorry. I think you have the wrong lioness. I'm not Kyoga, or a legend, I'm just... Nothing."
Nothing to Rain about her destiny Episode 8: Rain
"None of this has ever been worth it, Fire! Pride Law was built on fear and hate and... that's all it'll ever create. I can't believe I didn't see it for what it was before. I can't believe I didn't see you, for what you were before."
Nothing to Fire about him and Pride Law Episode 10: Pride Law
"You were called Nothing. You love one called Feather and one called Hover. When you fall, you know how to stand up. You have been wounded by the cruelty of this world, but you have not let it make you cruel. You know what is right and you will fight for it. You are good. You matter!"

Interesting Facts[]

  • Nothing is a reincarnation of Kyoga.[13]
  • The name suggestion from Powerstrike, 'Hobblestep', may be a homage to the book of My Pride, where Nothing was named Hobblestep after failing her huntress assessment.[14]
    • In the original book, Hobblestep eventually renames herself Storm.[15]
  • Nothing was originally designed when Tribble was fourteen. She was named 'Hobblestep' and had green eyes and brown fur, as well as different scars. The only thing Hobblestep and Nothing have in common is the injured leg.[citation needed]
  • Nothing is 'cursed'. The Goddesses get angry when Nothing gets attacked, which is the reason why Proudmane let her live after he took over Quickmane's Pride.[2][3]
  • According to Powerstrike, if Nothing did not have an injured leg, she could have become the next Hunt Chief.[2]
    • Though, this might be Powerstrike exaggerating on how Nothing's injuries affect her.[2]

Team Statements[]

  • On Twitter, Tribble said that if Nothing was male, her name would be Smoke.[citation needed]
  • According to tribbleofdoom, she said that had Nothing passed her huntress assessment, her name would still have been Hobblestep, or something to do with her bravery/courage.[16]
