Cubs are young lions under the age of 1-2 years old.[1] They are often looked after by their mothers until weaned, after which the old, injured or sick lionesses stay behind during hunts to watch over and protect them.[2]
Once female cubs reach the age of 1-2 years old, they go through a huntress assessment and receive their huntress name in honor of their skills.[1] If a lioness is disabled or injured, their assessment may be postponed.[3] Male cubs leave their Pride at the age of approximately 2-3 years old, aiming to start or find and lead their own Pride in order to earn their status as a Mane.[4]
